The first comment from Guardiola after the defeat against Real Madrid: “They did it as their history says”
Manchester City’s hopes of meeting the Champions League final with rivals Liverpool for the title ended with another epic comeback for Real Madrid.
Pep Guardiola’s side looked as if they were heading into an all-English final with Jurgen Klopp’s side, until Real scored twice late, sending the standoff into overtime. Then Karim Benzema converted a penalty kick in the fifth minute of the first overtime period, to put the 13-time winner Real ahead 6-5 on aggregate, an advantage they did not concede.
This is the return of Real Madrid for the third time in a row, who fought similar confrontations in previous rounds against Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea. It seemed that Mahrez decided City’s place in the final with a sweeping finish in the 73rd minute, but Real simply refused to be defeated.
Guardiola spoke after the match, and his statements were as follows:
Defeat analysis: “In the first half we were not good and when we were the best in the second half we had a two-goal difference in our favor in the two games aggregate. There was no need to waste time, we got it under control. They put a lot of players in the penalty area and found their way to score goals.”
Did you see yourself in the final?: “No, not by experience in the field, but we were very close. They had to score two goals, but they were able to do it, their history says. Congratulations to them and to Liverpool.”
“I have suffered other hard defeats in the Champions League, such as the defeat I received with Barcelona against Chelsea”
City Football: “It’s a big blow for us, that’s normal. But we lacked effectiveness at the start of the match, and we didn’t have continuity when we were better…”.
Did you deserve more? : “I don’t know if we deserve more. It is what it is.”
Does he miss the Champions League?: “I don’t know. I am very happy here. We did great things, and we were missing out in the end. We’re still here, and we’ll see in the future.”
